Declutter your home. Remove the unessential items -- knickknacks, artwork, collectibles, pictures -- from each room.
Remove heavy curtains that block natural light. Replace curtains with natural grass or wooden matchstick blinds, adding an earthy texture and providing privacy. If privacy isn't a concern, take down window treatments in those rooms completely.
Paint dark or brightly colored walls in pale colors, such as shades of white or light pastels, making rooms appear more spacious and light.
Arrange furniture pieces, leaving open space in the middle of each room. Keep furniture to a minimum, using only functional pieces. Purchase simplistic, Asian-styled coffee tables, end tables and night stands in dark-toned woods as a replacement for or in addition to existing furniture.
Cover brightly colored sofas or chairs with neutral beige or white furniture slipcovers.
Hide electronic items -- TV, radio, speakers, clocks -- from open view in a simplistic-style cabinet. Tuck electric cords behind furniture or under rugs. Use natural, woven baskets to store remotes.
Add minimal decorative items to each room, bringing the serenity of nature and the Asian culture indoors: bonsai trees, shoji screens, bamboo plants, Japanese lanterns and umbrellas, waterfalls, tatami mats, toss pillows in earth-toned colors, calligraphy artwork, woven baskets, Asian statutes.
