Design Ideas if a Room Is Painted Brown

Brown, like black, white and gray, is a neutral color that looks good when you add pops of color to a room. It's best used in moderation, especially when the walls in your room are painted brown. Combining light or pastel colors with brown is the best way to soften the look and feel of a room so that it doesn't look too dark and gloomy.
  1. Window Treatments

    • Choose a color that really pops with brown, such as pink or powder blue, as the color of your window treatments. Whether you choose Roman blinds or drapes, solid or printed fabrics in these colors complement a room painted in brown. Likewise, other neutral colors, such as window treatments in white and beige, blend in naturally in a brown room. Moreover, window treatments in a natural material, such as bamboo, also go well with brown walls.

    Bedding

    • As with your window treatments, cover your bed in sheets that stand out against brown walls. For example, cover your bed in white sheets, a pink bedspread and brown pillowcases. You can even cover your bed in pink, brown, yellow or orange sheets -- whichever color combination you choose for your room -- and fold a brown duvet over your bed. Aside from mixing and matching colors, you can also use printed sheets, which would especially pull the room together if you match the print of your sheets to the print of your window treatments.

    Furniture

    • Brown is a darker color, so if you choose wooden furniture in your room, select a lighter wood finish, such as oak, pine or honey maple. Another option for a room with brown walls is to decorate with white furniture as it will stand out against your brown walls. Include a furniture piece, such as an upholstered couch or armchair and ottoman in a bright color, such as pink, powder blue or orange, for a pop of color.

    Accessories

    • Accessorize a room painted brown in the same way as you would the other elements in the room by adding a splash of color. Whether it's a bedroom or a living room, for example, decorate with colorful accessories such as pink, powder blue or orange throw pillows, lamps, or decorative objects and works of art. Choose one or two colors, such as pink and orange throw pillows or lampshades in either solid colors or prints. Displaying flowers in any of these colors is another way to add a pop of color in a room that's painted brown.
