How to Decorate a Nook Next to a Fireplace

Clear out the area around your fireplace. Dust, vacuum or sweep the area and remove any standing clutter. The entire area must be clean before you begin to decorate.

Place a comfortable reclining chair or beanbag chair in your nook. One of the primary elements of any fireplace nook is a comfortable place to sit and relax. Depending on your age and decorating preferences, you may prefer a stylish leather ottoman to sit on or even a sturdy rocking chair. Pick something that matches your decorating style and that you'll feel cozy in.

Add a small bookshelf in your nook. You don't necessarily need to keep books in your nook, especially if you don't like reading for relaxation. Use the bookshelf to store DVDs, stack magazines, snacks or even display your iPod.

Put up a wall hanging in your nook. Pick a family portrait you like, an ocean painting or even a rock poster of a band you enjoy. Keep your wall decor in your nook minimal, but comfortable. If the picture makes you feel anxious or uneasy, opt for something different. Your wall hanging should make you feel relaxed and at peace with the world.

Complete your nook with a small basket. Put the basket next to your chair and use it to store the television remote, your cell phone charger or an extra pair of slippers. You can even keep a can of soda or a favorite snack in the basket. The key is to use it to store things you might need while enjoying the comfort of your nook.
