How to Decorate a Resort Bedroom

A resort bedroom should be a relaxing, comfortable getaway for guests, whether it's in a private home or at an expensive hotel. Use color and fabric to make economical changes that still reflect the resort's theme. Customized furnishings, accessories and art complete the picture for a designer with a more generous budget.
  1. Beach Resort

    • Use light, gauzy curtains on the windows in a beach resort room. Install blackout shades that roll up and out of the way during the daytime. Pale wall colors and wicker furniture with floral cushions suggest the beach, as does a light color carpet. Add a ceiling fan with broad blades. Hang art with images from the local beach, such as a lighthouse, a crab shack or sailboats in the bay. Set large baskets filled with tropical flowers around the room, and replace a traditional dresser with a shelving unit with baskets for drawers. Fill a basket with rolled up beach towels.

    Ski Resort

    • Install an electric fireplace and set two overstuffed chairs in front of it. Lay a down-filled mattress cover or a feather tick on the bed and use dark linens. Throw a faux bearskin over classic plaid blankets. Have vintage ski resort posters framed for hanging and paint the walls a neutral brown or green. Carpet the room a dark color and continue the winter theme with high-pile Flokati rugs in front of the fireplace and beside the bed. Install a Jacuzzi tub in one corner of the room for apres ski soaking and set a decorative screen with winter scenes, mountains or snowflakes painted on it in front of the tub.

    Adventure Resort

    • Encourage a guest's sense of adventure in a resort bedroom. Use canvas walls and a peak made of canvas over the bed to suggest a tent, or hang mosquito netting around the bed. Install a dark wood ceiling and floor and put jute rugs down. Drape French doors with either canvas or mosquito netting and hang a hammock on the patio or balcony. Paint the walls a neutral tan. Hang artwork with jungle animals or woodsy scenes, or cover one wall with a mural depicting people engaging in the resort's activities, like riding an elephant or diving off cliffs.

    Kid's Themed Resort

    • Plan large bedrooms at a kid's themed resort so young guests can stay in the same room with their parents, but have a private space of their own. Hide bunk beds with the head of the beds placed against a wall and add drapes the child can pull at nighttime. Build a faux log cabin in part of the room and outfit it with a video game console and flat panel television for rainy days. Make sitting and dining areas in the adult part of the room and use a decorative folding screen to create a little privacy around the bed.
