How to Decorate a Ledge Above a Front Door

A ledge above a front door can give you more shelving space, but it can also provide you with an opportunity to add a special decorative touch to your entry. You can't see this ledge when you enter your home, but visitors will glance up at it as they leave. This allows you to make a final impression on your guests, so decorate it in a way that suits your home and your personality.

Instructions

    • 1

Make the ledge above the front door a holiday spot. In the fall, fill it with pumpkins, cornucopias and sheaves of wheat. In the winter, throw up some pine boughs covered in fake snow. On July 4, stick dozens of small flags in foam, and arrange them on the shelf.

Display old books on the ledge above the door. Go to the thrift store or Goodwill, and look for vintage books, such as old school readers. Prop them on the shelf, holding them up with a pair of vintage bookends.

    • 3

Arrange artificial plants and silk flowers on the ledge. This gives your home a wonderfully natural look, and the faux greenery won't need any watering.

    • 4

Place a clock up on the ledge or over it. A carriage clock works well, as does a simple wall clock.
This use of the ledge can be both decorative and utilitarian. You'll always know what time it is when you leave the house.
