Many homeowners paint the den in a dark, rich color suitable to lounging and working, yet kitchens are painted in a bright pop of color such as yellow, orange or even shades of red. Paint three walls a bold shade of espresso or another coffee-rich shade and add a fourth wall of cherry red or even a fourth wall of red and brown striped wallpaper. These colors provide a balance of color yet are also colors that are conducive to working. Those desiring a soft palette can switch the espresso for a soft tan and a lighter shade of red, such as a rose red.
Ideally, the kitchen working overtime as a den is a larger space. However, not all homes have the luxury of a large kitchen. A kitchen still functions as a den, even in a smaller space, but you need to select furnishings that fit into the space without looking cramped. Add a smaller kitchen table and chairs and remove any decorative hutches if you're cramped on space. Add a set of leather club chairs and a small couch, as well as a television, for the den portion of the room.
Ensure each piece you add to the room has hidden storage. A coffee table with a storage compartment hidden underneath is the ideal hiding space for items typically found in a den such as magazines, DVDs or equipment. A dining table with additional storage underneath provides a place for books and other small goods. The beauty of storage in a cramped or dual-functioning space is that it beautifully hides clutter.
Select textiles that have an interesting pattern or those made of rich, sophisticated fabrics. A leather wall hanging balances a set of suede curtains complemented by cream colored sheers. There is also immense practicality in this set of curtains, as the sheers work for daytime by optimizing sunlight and the curtains work for nighttime television watching by enhancing the dark space and adding a layer of privacy.
