How to Dress a French Door

On-door Curtains

  Cut a piece of fabric for each door that is twice as wide and 6 inches longer than the window. Press a 1/2-inch hem into all four sides of the fabric pieces and sew around with a sewing machine. On the top and bottom edges, press an additional 2-inch hem and sew at the bottom, forming a casing.

  Slide a curtain rod onto the top casing of one panel. Install the rod by screwing it into the wood just above the window on the door. Repeat with the bottom of that panel, and with the other door and panel.

  Slide the panels so they are evenly gathered on the rods. The ends of the fabric should wrap around the end of the curtain rod, so that the sides of the window are covered for privacy.

Floor-to-Ceiling Curtains

  Install brackets to hold a curtain rod with finials at least 12 inches above the set of French doors. Use screws and wall anchors to hold the brackets in place securely.

  Measure from the floor to the brackets. Also measure across the doors. Cut two pieces of semi-sheer fabric to these measurements. Also cut 16 pieces of 2-inch-wide ribbon to 6 inches long.

  Press a 1/4-inch hem around all four sides of both fabric panels. Sew around these hems with a sewing machine. Press a 2-inch hem in the bottom and top and sew these hems as well.

  Fold each piece of ribbon in half and pin the free ends behind the top edge of the fabric panels. Each panel gets eight evenly spaced ribbon hoops. Sew these ribbons in place by sewing a square with an "X" in the center.

  Slide the panels onto the curtain rod. Place the finials on the ends of the curtain rod and place the rod on the brackets. Slide closed or open on both sides of the doors, depending on the level of privacy you need.
