How to Decorate a Condo Like a New York Loft

A true New York loft is typically a converted space with design accentuating that. It often has a large, open style that incorporates eclectic elements that mix vintage and cutting-edge contemporary as well as traditional American decor with a global influence. Hardwood floors, high ceilings, floating ceilings and walls, exposed building structure and a common two-level floor plan serve as the foundation. Whether your condominium features these things or not, you can mimic the style of a New York loft with furnishings, color choices and accenting similar architectural elements.

Instructions

    • 1

Install hardwood floors or wood laminate floors, if you're going for a larger remodeling project. Most lofts have signature wood floors or stained and polished concrete, which offers a lower-cost solution with more of a contemporary feel.

    • 2

Bring in exposed overhead lighting that hangs from the ceiling. Primitive and industrial-looking pendant lamps work just as well as an elegant cluster of contemporary, bold-colored chandeliers or paper lanterns. Lofts typically have high, exposed rafters and beams for a warehouse feel. Leave your ceiling open if you have something similar.

    • 3

Install a floating wall. A classic loft may have a skeletal look to it where hanging walls, screens or makeshift partitions divide one giant room into several separate areas where you can still see beyond, but offer a bit of privacy for the bedroom. Install a curtain or open bookcase for a similar effect and a touch of texture.

    • 4

Bring in furniture that mixes old and new style. New York lofts will have a modern and sleek sofa next to a classic, timeworn armchair with a similar color or silhouette but contrasting texture or some other design element.

    • 5

Decorate with accents from eclectic styles. Instead of going with a particular theme, bring harmony to the condominium by mixing various shapes, colors and textures that all have something in common with another item.

    • 6

Accent large windows, if you have them. Lofts usually have large, high windows or even floor-to-ceiling windows. Hang tall, sheer curtains that graze the floor to heighten the ceiling as in a loft. Use mounting hardware that looks basic and skeletal rather than ornate and heavy. Curtain clips on a pulley cable work well.

    • 7

Feature plenty of art and wall hangings in your loft. Many loft styles originated in artists' studios, where they'd have to live and work. Place colorful paintings, dramatic photographs and vintage prints in clusters, neat rows or sparsely throughout the condo.

Re-purpose old furniture and pieces to provide something functional in your loft. Even if your condo is larger, loft residents typically must make the most of their space, especially in New York. Stack several suitcases together for a vintage-inspired, makeshift coffee or side table. Turn an old dresser into a silverware and china buffet in the dining area.

Replace heavy, opaque doors with clear glass doors or panels and sheer dividers to create the illusion of one divided room to expand the space and brighten the mood.
