How to Create a Girl's Headboard From a Door

A bed frame without a headboard can slide into a wall and leave marks or gouges in its finished surface. An old door with a solid core can protect a bedroom wall and give a girl a surface to lean against while reading or listening to music on her bed. Using a door with recessed squares to make a headboard gives you an opportunity to recycle a door and to personalize it to your daughter's taste with fabric squares.

Instructions

Measure the width of the bed frame with a tape measure and add about 6 inches to give you 3 inches of extra space on each side of the headboard after the bed frame has been bolted in. Turn the door sideways and measure its width. Mark how much of the door you need to cut off. For example, if your bed frame is 52 inches wide and you add 6 inches, the width of the door turned sideways and after you cut it should be 58 inches. Cut the door to the correct size with a circular saw.

Measure the hole in the side of the door where the lock and doorknob used to be with a measuring tape. Mark a block of wood with these measurements. Trim the block with a circular saw to fit in the hole. Tap the block into the hole with a hammer. Fill in any gaps with wood putty and a putty knife. Let the putty dry.

Sand away loose finish or paint on the door with a sander. Wipe the door down with a tack cloth. Paint the door with white paint and a paintbrush. Let the door dry. Measure the recessed squares in the door. Cut pieces of particle board with a circular saw so the particle board will fit into each recess with about a 1/4-inch gap on all sides.

Cut pieces of fabric that match the decor of the girl's room with scissors. The fabric pieces should be big enough to cover each piece of particle board with an extra 2 inches on each edge to wrap around the back of the board. Wrap and glue the fabric into place on the back of the particle board with a glue gun. Let the glue dry. Spread more glue with the glue gun on the back of the fabric-covered board and press each board, glue side first, into each recessed square. The fabric side should face outward. Let the glue dry.

Measure and mark where the bed frame hardware fastens onto the headboard. Drill guide holes for the bed frame brackets on the headboard. Mate the guide holes on the bed frame brackets to the guide holes on the headboard. Insert a 1/2-by-2-inch bolt into each hole until the bolt goes through the bracket and headboard. Place a nut over the end of each bolt behind the headboard, and tighten it with a wrench.
