How to Create a Pink Shabby Chic Bathroom

Transform your bathroom into a sweet, feminine retreat by giving it a pink shabby chic makeover. Shabby chic decor is casually elegant, with formal appointments used in relaxed ways. Pink typically features heavily in shabby chic interiors, especially when it's balanced with plenty of white. Because many bathrooms only have one small window, and some don't have windows at all, pink is an ideal color choice. It looks good in both artificial and natural light.

Instructions

    • 1

Paint your bathroom walls pastel pink, either warm shell pink or cooler powder pink, as you prefer. If you have beadboard or wainscoting on the lower part of the walls, paint it white and paint the pink on the wall above. Paint your doors and trim white.

Hang a second shower rod in front of the one you use for the liner, ideally a white wood or iron rod. Select a cloth shower curtain in pink and white ticking stripes, vintage-looking floral or pink damask. Thread pink grosgrain ribbons through the openings meant for rings. Tie the curtain to the rod with the ribbons, but keep them loose enough for the curtain to slide along the rod. Knot the ribbons or tie them in a bow, and then clip the ribbon ends at 45-degree angles.

Paint your wooden vanity with a coat of pink paint, and then top it with a coat of white. Apply a layer of brush-on crackling medium to let bits of the pink show through the white, which gives the vanity an antique look. Add new pulls and knobs made of white porcelain or 1920s-inspired clear glass. For a wall-mounted sink, attach a gathered sink skirt with hook-and-loop tape. Use the same fabric you used for the shower curtain, or opt for a coordinating print or solid pink.

Replace your medicine cabinet with an ornate, decorative mirror. Suitable styles range from the dainty metalwork of Adam-style mirrors to the heavy carvings of Baroque pieces. Leave them gilded, or opt for a fresh coat of white paint. For more color, consider an Italian tole mirror with a frame of painted metal flowers.

Embellish a small-scale crystal chandelier with pink glass drops or beads. Paint a hardware-store ceiling medallion with white and several shades of pink, ranging from your wall color to strawberry pink. Hang the medallion and chandelier over the tub if you have a separate tub and shower, or in the center of the room if the tub and shower are combined.

Dress your bathroom window, if you have one, with a pair of scalloped eyelet curtains, painted shutters or a white woven shade. If privacy isn't a concern, drape a filmy scarf or a scrap of antique lace over a curtain rod.

Accessorize by hanging fluffy, white hand towels embellished with a fabric ruffle or applique ribbon. Add a small, tiered table made of bamboo or distressed, painted wood, if you have the space. Top the table with a trio of apothecary jars or a milk-glass compote to hold decorative soaps or sundries. Use the additional shelves for rolled-up towels in pink and white, or for vintage, painted tins full of toiletries. Place a pink porcelain saucer or berry bowel on your vanity to hold a bar of hand soap.
