How to Color Archway Walls Between the Kitchen & the Living Room

Often times the kitchen and the living room aren't separated by an actual door -- they're separated by an arched wall that leaves the kitchen and living room as one open, continuous space. This is a favorable floor plan for families that want to spend a lot of time together in the living room and kitchen, but this type of layout can leave people wondering what to do when it comes time to paint.

Instructions

    • 1

Break up the space between the kitchen and the living room by painting the arched doorway a dramatically different color than any other color on the walls. For example, paint the walls of the kitchen and living room in a light neutral color like khaki and then paint the arched wall between the two rooms in a deep, dark red. This will make the division between the living room and the kitchen more clear.

    • 2

Keep the space between the kitchen and the living room open and continuous by painting the arched wall the same color as the kitchen and living room, whatever that color may be. In this case you'll usually want the color of the walls to be neutral.

    • 3

Separate the kitchen and living room from one another by painting them in colors that are only slightly different, in order to maintain a sense of flow between one room and another. For example, paint the kitchen in a shell pink, and paint the living room in a light gold. These colors are both light and airy, and that quality will flow between the two rooms. Paint one side of the arched wall in one color, and paint the other side of the arched wall in the other color. Pick one color to paint the underside of the arch.

    • 4

Separate the kitchen and living room by painting them in colors that are the complements of each other, meaning that they are found opposite one another on the color wheel. For example, paint the living room in a rich red, and paint the kitchen in a light mint green. This will mean anyone standing in the kitchen will automatically be drawn to the color in the kitchen and vice versa.
