Serene Meditation Room Ideas

Meditation is best performed in a quiet space that serves as an escape. A serene meditation room provides a relaxing place to go for stress relief, exercise and quiet reflection. If possible, choose a large room in your home that has natural lighting and is removed from the main activity areas.
  1. Colors

    • Stay away from dark or vibrant colors when choosing what to paint the walls of your mediation room. Stick with white, light gray or shades that represent elements of nature, such as a light blue or turquoise to represent the sky or tropical ocean waters. Keep all furniture and accessories light as well, using woods that are lighter in color such as birch, ash or butternut.

    Lighting

    • If possible, choose a room to serve as your meditation room that has a lot of natural lighting from windows or a skylight. Adding a sunroom to your home with windows on all three sides may provide the ideal meditation spot. Install blinds on any windows to help control the flow of light to fit your different moods. Add overhead lighting with a dimmer switch to allow you to provide a softer light. Add cooler shades of light with green or blue lightbulbs.

    Furniture

    • Keep furniture in the room to a minimum. If you prefer to meditate in a chair or on a sofa, include a set of chairs or single sofa in the room in a light shade. Most people prefer to meditate on the floor, so include a soft rug and a few floor pillows to make sitting on the floor comfortable. If you also plan to use the room for yoga or other relaxing exercises, add a rubber mat to the floor instead of a soft rug. Add a few low tables to hold candles, books on meditation and any other items you may need while meditating.

    Decorations

    • The more decorations in a meditation room, the more distractions to keep you from successfully meditating. Keep decorations minimal. Include a few candles for soft lighting. Bring in green plants to provide oxygen. Tropical plants may make the room seem more like a vacation destination than a room in your home. Add a CD player or simple sound system to play soft music to enhance your meditation, or include a tabletop or indoor waterfall to add a soothing sound to the room. If you want to add curtains to the window, keep them sheer to avoid blocking the natural light. Hang a wind chime or a set of bells in front of an open window for a soft, relaxing sound.
