How to Make a Sheer Door

If you're trying to mark a boundary between one room and another, you have many alternatives to wooden and metal doors. In some cases, you can hang beads or a canvas curtain in the doorway. In other cases, you can even paint the wall of the doorway a dramatically different color to symbolize the boundary between the two rooms. Or, you can hang a sheer curtain in the doorway to represent a door. A sheer curtain won't block light or sound, but it will prevent someone from seeing from one room into the other.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove any hinges from the doorway to start with a clean slate. Use a screwdriver.

    • 2

Measure the doorway where you will be hanging the sheer. Use this to find the right sheer panel and the right curtain rod. The sheer panel should be at least 1 foot longer than the length of the doorway, and it should be as tall as the length of the doorway from the floor to the place where you plan to hang the curtain rod. The curtain rod should be capable of spanning the width of the door.

    • 3

Mark the door frame on one side where you plan to install the curtain rod for the panel. This is where the first bracket will be installed. Measure the length of the door frame from the top of the doorway to the mark you made, and from the sides of the door frame to the mark you made. Mark the other side of the door frame to show where the second bracket will be installed. Place the mark at a measurement that corresponds to the first mark you placed on the door. This way the curtain rod will be level.

    • 4

Drill a pilot hole into the wood frame at the mark you made, which is where you plan to hang the rod. The pilot hole should be slightly smaller than the screw that will hold the bracket for the rod. Drill a second pilot hole at the mark you made on the other side of the door frame.

    • 5

Screw in the brackets on either side of the door frame, using the pilot holes you just drilled.

    • 6

Attach the sheer panel to the curtain rod by inserting the curtain rod at the top of the panel, then attach the curtain rod to the brackets.
