If you want to remove odors such as from pets, tobacco smoke, cooking or even mildew, consider a Berger lamp (aka Lampe Berger). The lamps clean the air by a unique process of high-temperature catalytic combustion. The combustion destroys bacteria and the molecules behind odors while lightly perfuming the air. For an average room, the odors will be eliminated in just a few minutes; regular air fresheners just cover up the odors with fragrance.
Fill the lamp 2/3 full with fragrance oil.
Soak the dry wick for 20 minutes with the solid cap on. This is only necessary when using the wick for the first time.
Uncap the burner and light it. Be sure there is nothing flammable above the lamp as the flame will be a tall one, maybe 4 or 5 inches.
Let the flame burn for two minutes. You'll notice after one minute that the flame is smaller due to the alcohol in the burner being burnt off.
Carefully blow out the flame and replace the vented shade; do not touch the burner as it will be very hot.
Allow the Lampe Berger to clean the air of an average-size home for 45 to 50 minutes.
Remove the vented shade and replace with the solid cap.
