How to Hang Mason Jar Pendant Lighting

Mason jar chandeliers make a chic country statement without a whole lot of investment in either time or money. Hanging them is relatively simple, although you do have to take the time and effort to gather the proper equipment. If you are using a plug-in lamp cord, use a swag hook; if wiring the lighting yourself, be sure to have a snug-fitting decorative light ceiling plate that has a large enough opening to accommodate the light's electrical cord.

Things You'll Need

  • Ladder
  • Goggles
  • Swag hook (large)
  • Drill
  • Screwdriver
  • Electrical wire clippers
  • Circuit tester
  • Ceiling plate
  • Low wattage bulbs, no more than 40 watts

Instructions

  1. Plug-in Lighting

    • 1

Place your ladder under the desired spot you wish to hang your Mason jar lighting. Put on your goggles. Drill a hole large enough to accommodate the widest part of your swag bracket, also known as the toggle.

    • 2

Hold the toggle with the narrow end upward. Screw the toggle onto the swag hook's bolt. Leave one-quarter inch at the bottom.

    • 3

Push the toggle through the hole in the ceiling. You should feel it spring open when it comes free of the ceiling material. Attach the hook to the end of the bolt, tightening it slowly until it is flush with the ceiling.

    • 4

Hang your Mason jar lights from your swag hook and plug in. Your lighting will be secure and hold firm with the toggle properly in place.

Wiring Lights from an Existing Light Fixture

    • 5

Place your ladder under the desired spot. Turn off the power to the room at your circuit breaker box. Put on your goggles. Take off the old lighting fixture and remove the screws. Test the exposed wires with a circuit tester to be doubly sure you have flipped the correct breaker switch. Remove the mounting bracket that goes across the mounting outlet box by unscrewing the two screws on either side. Disconnect the fixtures wires, which you can do by untwisting them.

    • 6

Take your Mason jar lighting and remove the jars from the lids. This will prevent you from breaking the jars as you are working with the wiring. Climb the ladder with your lighting assembly and locate the white-colored neutral wire on each end of your lighting cords. Using your wire clippers, peel back 1/2-inch of the wire's insulation.

    • 7

Locate the black wire from the lighting cords and remove one-half of its insulation with your wire clippers; do the same with the green grounding wire. Thread your cords through the hole in the ceiling plate and tie a knot in each one to keep them from slipping back through. Connect each corresponding wire from the lighting cords to the ceiling fixture. Twist wire connectors clockwise onto each pair. Do not connect more than three lighting cords otherwise you will overload the circuit.

Push all of the wires back into the ceiling along with the knots. Place the mounting bracket over the two screw holes in the mounting outlet box and screw into place. Slide the ceiling plate flush with the ceiling and attach with the screws provided with the plate into the mounting bracket.

Put low wattage light bulbs into the light sockets and attach the jars to the lids. Flip the breaker.
