How to Care for 3 Wick Candles

The ambiance and mood set by candles appeals to many people. When you add the subtle scents that candles often give off, the combination creates an appealing environment in the home. Combine votives, pillars, tapers and three-wick candles together and you have a candle grouping that will set a comfortable mood. Care for three-wick candles carefully when you burn them to ensure the melting wax stays on top of the candle. If the wax runs down the side, it may damage the candle.

Things You'll Need

  • Scissors
  • Candleholder
  • Lighter
  • Wick dipper (or other long metal implement)

Instructions

    • 1

Trim all three wicks to an equal height of 1/4-inch with the scissors. Discard the excess wicks--do not leave them on the candle.

    • 2

Set the candle into a candleholder that can contain melted wax (in the event that wax melts down the side of the candle).

    • 3

Light all three wicks with the lighter at the same time with the lighter.

    • 4

Place a three-wick candle in a burning location free of all drafts. If you have pets or small children, place burning candles in places they cannot reach.

    • 5

Supervise the candle as it burns to ensure it burns properly. As the three wicks burn, they will eventually melt together on the top of the candle into one large pool of wax. Make sure this pool of wax stays away from the outer edge of the candle because if it gets too close, it will melt over the edge of the candle and wax will run down the side of the candle. Drafts in a room can push the wax too close to the candle edge.

Extinguish the candle if the wax pool gets within 1 inch of the outer edge and allow the wax to harden completely before relighting the candle. The best way to extinguish a candle is to use a wick dipper (or other metal implement) to push the lit wick beneath the melted wax. This will immediately extinguish the wick without smoke. Pull the wick back out of the wax and straighten it after you extinguish it. Repeat this with each wick.
