# How to Make an Oil Lamp Using Mason Jars
The increased cost of electricity can put a burden on your energy bills every month. Other options are available for getting additional light without using your home lighting such as candles and battery-powered lamps, but wax can get messy and batteries also cost money. An oil-based lamp is cheap, long lasting, not messy and easy on Mother Nature. Mason jars make perfect setups for the home-based oil lamp.
Things You'll Need
- Pliers
- Thin wire
- Wick
- Mason jar
- Wire cutter
- Olive oil

Use pliers to twist one end of the wire into a coil around the wick. Twist the coil enough to cover a full 2 inches of the wick, but leave 1/4 inch of the wick open above the coil.

Continue bending the wire into a slowly widening, loose coil. Circle the wire around two to three times until it lays flat on the bottom and it is almost as wide as the jar. The distance from the tip of the coil surrounding the wick to the bottom of the jar will be around 2 inches.

Bend the rest of the wire perpendicular to the coil so that it goes straight up and out of the jar.

Bend the remaining wire down around the jar lip so that it makes a hook several inches long. Cut off any excess wire.

Pour olive oil into the jar until it gets 1/4 inch below the coil wrapped around the wick.

Light the part of wick that sticks out above the coil. The candle will burn for several hours before needing more oil.
