How to Hang Pictures With a Keyhole Opening

Choosing the correct equipment for picture-hanging can mean the difference between a small, repairable hole and an insecure fastener that can damage drywall. Heavy pieces require specialized hanging backs that can balance the weight, while keyhole openings are ideal for lightweight picture frames. The hole features a cutout space that is long on top with a larger hole attached to the button, much like a keyhole. The screw fits into the hole and moves through the narrow shaft, which securely surrounds the screw to steady the picture on the wall.

Select a spot on the wall. Select a spot around the most dramatic large piece, which will draw the eyes to the smaller frame as well. Alternatively, group familial photos together.

    • 2

Measure the length of the frame and divide the number in half to find the center of the back of the frame. Add 1 inch to 2 inches to the calculation; this depends on how much space you want to have between preexisting wall photos, if applicable.

    • 3

Measure the calculated length on the wall at the desired height and draw a mark with a pencil. Place the nail on the mark and hammer in the nail, leaving 1/4 inch of the nail out of the hole. Insert the nail into the hole on the back of the frame and adjust the frame to make sure it is even.
