How to Cover Blackened Corners of a Mirror

Mirrors are a vital accessory that provide a reflection to facilitate dressing and grooming ourselves. Mirrors are also used in home design and decor to create the illusion of space in small rooms. Black spots on the edges of mirrors are generally due to a cleaning product or moisture becoming trapped between the mirror and its backing. If you want to cover the blackened corners of your mirror and have a knack for DIY, you can easily create small pockets of plain, colored or patterned fabric to place over the corners of your mirror.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay your scrap fabric on a flat surface in front of you. Measure the distance diagonally across the corner of your mirror that has the most damage with a measuring tape. Make sure the diagonal line created by your measuring tape encases the blackened section completely because this measurement will be used to create your fabric coverings. Mark the mirror with fabric chalk where the diagonal measurement begins and ends. Measure the distance between the first mark and the corner of the mirror with your measuring tape. Measure the distance between the second mark and the corner of the mirror with your measuring tape. Add 1 inch to each of these three measurements for seam allowance and write them down on a piece of paper.

Lay the scrap fabric on a flat surface in front of you. Draw eight separate triangle shapes on the fabric with the dimensions you calculated above. Mark the side with the diagonal measurement you took on each triangle with fabric chalk.

    • 3

Cut your triangles out of the fabric with sewing scissors.

    • 4

Place the triangles in groups of two. Place one piece of fabric in each group on top of the other piece of fabric with the right sides of the fabric facing inward.

    • 5

Pin two side seams of each set of fabric together with sewing pins, leaving the side you marked with the diagonal measurement open. You should have four triangular pockets of fabric.

    • 6

Sew the two side seams of each of the pockets together with your sewing machine.

    • 7

Turn the triangular pockets right-side out and place them over the corners of your mirror.
