Carving a Name With a Dremel

The Dremel is a versatile rotary tool. The tool’s motor spins the attached tip to cut, carve, sand or rout. You can set up your Dremel to carve names into wood or metal with an engraving cutter tip. Personalize a piece of woodwork or a project with a decorative name. You can also sign your name to a project as an artist with a Dremel. The process is simple and is almost as easy as writing with a pen or pencil.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine how deep and wide you would like the name to be on your project. Select a cutter that will cut the correct depth. The cutters are set up similar to pen tips where they may engrave fine, medium or bold letters.

    • 2

Use your pencil to trace the letters onto your wooden project. If you are carving a name onto metal, use a felt tip pen.

    • 3

Attach the Flex Shaft attachment by removing the driver’s cap of the Dremel and screwing the collar of the Flex Shaft to the Dremel.

    • 4

Hang the Dremel by the loop on the end of the tool to the Dremel stand. The stand should be set up next to your workspace.

    • 5

Insert the engraving cutter into the end of the Flexshaft attachment by loosening the screw collar on the end and pushing the end of the cutter into the hole. Tighten the screw collar to ensure the engraving cutter will not come out.

    • 6

Plug the Dremel into an electrical source. Turn the power on and let the Dremel get up to speed. You will know it is up to speed when the motor ceases to sound like it is gaining speed and is making a noise with a consistent pitch.

Hold the Flex Shaft attachment like a pen or pencil. Slowly and carefully trace over the letters you drew.
