How to Dress Up a Metal Shelf Cart

Metal utility carts are handy for the kitchen, dining area, patio or garage. The carts typically have three shelves, wheels and a push-handle on the top of one end. Refurbish a used cart, or decorate a new one to fit your home decor. Alternatively, design your own metal cart to use in any room of the house or even outdoors.

Instructions

  1. Ceramic Tiles

    • 1

Put a piece of paper on a shelf, and draw around the edges to make a template of the exact size and shape of the shelf. Cut out the shape, making duplicates if all the shelves are the same size. Repeat the tracing process for any shelf that is not the same size or shape as the others.

    • 2

Plan your design on each paper template to indicate where you will place the tiles. Draw around sample tiles in one or multiple sizes to help plan the design. Make a separate design for each shelf or one for all the shelves. Use colored marking pens or crayons to note where each colored tile will go.

    • 3

Count the number of tiles you need to create your desired design on the shelves. Separate the tiles into groups according to color and size for better organization.

    • 4

Spread grout on a small area at the bottom of the shelf according to instructions on the grout container. Make the layer of grout about half the height of the tiles. Follow your sketched pattern to place the tiles in the grout.

    • 5

Scrape off excess grout with a grouting tool in each area as you work. Wipe the tiles with a damp cloth to remove any grouting material from the top of the tiles as you complete each small section and again after you cover the entire bottom shelf.

    • 6

Cover the middle shelf with grout and tiles, then move on to the top shelf, following Steps 4 and 5.

    • 7

Let the metal cart dry thoroughly before use.

    Paint

    • 8

Sand a used cart to remove rust or chipped paint, then wash it with soap and water. Dry the washed areas thoroughly. Place masking tape on the edges of areas you don't want to paint, such as the frame, wheels and handle.

    • 9

Brush primer paint onto the areas you want to paint. Let the primer dry thoroughly before continuing.

    • 10

Paint the bottom shelf first, the middle shelf second, and then the top shelf. Paint the shelves in solid colors or in a desired design.

    • 11

Finish the cart project by painting the frame and handle, if desired.
