Decorating a Recessed Mantel

Fireplaces and entertainment centers are structural elements that serve both functional and aesthetic purposes in a living room or bedroom. Commonly, mantles protrude outward and can be utilized for storage or decoration. If you have a recessed mantel, however, take advantage of it's unique structure to show off your personal taste.
  1. Extra Storage

    • Use the mantel as extra storage while incorporating some design. Use the mantel as a bookshelf, with books lined up or in stacks. Put decorative book ends and candles around the books to complement the look. Add decorative boxes for further storage.

    Artwork

    • Use the mantel to display framed artwork, photographs and sculptures. Put the artwork on the mantel itself or hang the frames just above the mantel.

    Seasonal Changes

    • Use the mantel for season-appropriate decorations, and change the look according to the time of year. Put synthetic pine boughs, pine cones and Christmas ornaments on the mantel during Christmas, Thanksgiving decorations and cornucopias on the mantel during Thanksgiving, and pumpkins on the mantel for fall. Use vases and wreaths of freshly cut flowers during the spring and summer seasons.

    Antiques

    • Put rare and antique dishes, glasses and vases on the mantel to display beloved treasures. Supplement this chic, antique look with bottles of wine, brandy, whiskey and port for an old-world pub feel.
