Consider the style of your kitchen when planning a decorative theme. Copper, baskets and vintage dishes lend themselves to a cottage or French country motif, while a simple glass vase with a modern flower arrangement is better suited to a minimalist look. Use a collection of items or just one or two large pieces.
Place three to five large, colorful platters above the cabinet or hang them on the wall. When using collections, select odd numbers of at least three for a pleasing look. A collection of three pieces is always more interesting to the eye than just two.
Fill a large copper tub with dried or silk flowers to warm up a country kitchen. Baskets or jars with flowers are equally attractive. Choose large, vertical arrangements that will fill up the space from cabinets to vaulted ceiling. The higher the ceiling, the larger the pieces should be. Small decorative pieces seem lost and misplaced.
Scatter a collection of ironware or vintage dishes above the cabinets. A variety of dishes, such as teapots, urns and bowls, is usually more interesting than a row of one type of item.
Choose one or two pieces that reflect your motif, such as roosters. Use restraint when using themes, though. One or two pieces is charming, but any more becomes schmaltzy.
