Do-It-Yourself Cutting Chair Mats

When you are decorating your home, you may not have the budget to get as many room accessories, such as decorative chair pads, as you would like. One alternative is to make decorative chair pads yourself using a few basic fabric supplies that can be purchased inexpensively from an arts and crafts supply store or fabric shop. This also enables you to customize the chair pads to match the rest of your home decor.

Instructions

    • 1

Use scissors to cut a 18-inch square from oil-cloth fabric.

    • 2

Use scissors to cut a 18-inch square from cotton fabric.

    • 3

Place the two squares with the patterned sides together, then pin around the edges using straight pins, leaving a 1/2-inch seam allowance.

    • 4

Sew around the pinned edges with a sewing needle and thread, leaving 3 inches unsewn. Remove the straight pins.

    • 5

Turn the sewn form right-side out through the unsewn hole.

    • 6

Stuff the sewn form using cotton batting until it is 3 to 4 inches thick. Turn the edges of the opening inward by 1/2 inch, then sew it closed.

    • 7

Place a button onto the cotton side of the pad, positioning it near the center of the pad and 4 inches from the edge, then sew the button onto the pad using an embroidery needle and embroidery floss. Insert the needle straight through the pad to the other side, pull the needle slightly to cinch the pad together, then knot the floss onto the underside of the pad.

    • 8

Repeat to add a total of four buttons to complete the chair pad.
