How to Mount a Frame Over a Wall Mirror

Many large mirrors have a utilitarian beveled edge that doesn’t add anything to a room’s decor. The mirrors often have mounting clips that attach each side firmly to the wall. If you want to change the look of a mirror, create a frame out of decorative wood molding. Craft stores, as well as home stores, sell this product, which allows you to frame a mirror without removing it from the wall using epoxy glue.

  • Wood molding
  • Miter saw

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length and width of the mirror. Allow extra material for cutting the angled corners of the mirror frame. Take note of the width of the beveled edge as well. Find molding that has a rabbet cut along the back that is at least as wide as the beveled edge. Failure to do so may result in an unattractive line around the edge of the mirror from the edge’s reflection.

    • 2

Cut two pieces of molding the length of the mirror using a miter saw set at a 45-degree angle. Cut two pieces for the width at the same angle.

    • 3

Paint or stain all edges of the molding. Remember the mirror reflects the back side of the molding, so you want it to be the same color as the front. Allow the paint or stain to dry for at least two weeks to get maximum adhesion with the epoxy.

Mix equal parts of epoxy resin and epoxy hardener on a scrap piece of cardboard using a wooden craft stick. Spread a thin coat of epoxy along the rabbet joint on the molding. Mount the mirror frame to the mirror. Hold the molding in place with painter’s tape. Wipe off any excess epoxy from the molding or mirror. Allow the adhesive time to dry, following the manufacturer’s recommendation, before removing the tape.
