What to Use for a Preservative on a Slate Fountain

Preservation of slate is something of a misnomer when its intended use is in a fountain, whether indoors or out. The nature of slate as a metamorphic rock translates into natural durability. Although it is porous, clean distilled water causes it no harm whatsoever. Proper preservation lies in using the correct water for the fountain, and in periodic and careful cleaning to remove mineral deposits and algae growth.
  1. Sealing

    • Slate sealers often are applied when slate is used in flooring applications. The sealer does nothing for the integrity of the stone, but is purely aesthetic. Since slate is porous, it absorbs stains quickly, and those stains then become a permanent fixture. To get around this, a sealer is used to protect the color of the floor. In floor applications, sealers also make cleaning the floor easier. Sealers are unnecessary to preserve fountains.

    Water

    • The best preservation method against mineral build up and deposits is to use distilled water in your slate fountain. Distilled water is collected out of the air, and is very different from purified water, which still contains traces of minerals. A home dehumidifier is an excellent source of distilled water, especially if you live in a humid area. Otherwise, distilled water can be purchased at little cost.

    Mineral Deposits

    • Remove mineral deposits from the slate stone in your fountain with a chemical decalcifier and a very soft brush. Hard scrubbing can mar the surface of the slate, so always scrub carefully with light pressure. Follow the directions on the cleaner for best results. Avoid the use of soaps. While effective against mineral deposits, the soap is absorbed by the slate. The result is an eternally bubbly fountain as the absorbed soap suds up when contacted by fountain water.

    Cleaning

    • Follow the same procedure for routine cleaning as for mineral removal, using a soft brush and warm water. If the fountain is suffering from an algal problem, disassemble it according to manufacturer's instructions and spray lightly with a mild bleach-to-water solution. Rinse it well before putting it back together. Additives also are available that are added by the drop, and keep the water clear and your slate clean, preserving its beauty for years to come.
