How to Maintain Felt Pads on the Bottom of Chairs

Felt chair pads are used when you have hardwood flooring, as a means of preventing the chair legs from scratching the floor. However, felt chair pads become dirty and collect unsightly hair and dust over time. Instead of throwing the felt pads into the garbage can, clean the pads using a basic cleaning method, so you can continue using them to protect your floors. This way, you save money -- not just your wood flooring.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a bowl with 8 ounces of hot water and 1 tablespoon of oil soap. Stir the mixture with a spoon for one minute.

    • 2

Peel the felt pads off of the bottom of the chair legs and place them into the hot, soapy water. Allow the pads to soak in the water for 10 minutes. This will loosen the adhesive so that you can remove it.

    • 3

Peel off the adhesive from all four felt pads and discard the adhesive backings.

    • 4

Scrub the felt pads using a scrub brush. Move the brush in small, circular motions for five minutes.

    • 5

Rinse out the felt pads under warm water, squeeze them out and lay them flat onto a towel. Allow the pads to dry for four hours.

    • 6

Cut foam adhesive strips into circles that perfectly match the size and shape of the felt pads. Peel the backing off of each adhesive circle and place a foam adhesive circle onto each felt pad.

    • 7

Peel off the cover from each adhesive circle, then press the felt pads onto the ends of the chair legs with the adhesive side facing up.

    • 8

Repeat the process for each chair.
