Prior to homes being equipped with stoves, three-legged cast iron pots were often used for cooking over an open fire. When stoves with tops became common in homes during the 18th century, cast iron cookware, such as pots and pans, became popularized. Cast iron cookware heats food evenly, and can last a lifetime if properly seasoned. Reproductions of cast iron pots, pans and other cookware are still used in today's modern kitchen.
Cast iron stoves began being made in quantity during the early 18th century. These stoves were fueled by fire and included a top used for cooking. Reproductions of 18th century cast iron stoves are designed to look similar to the originals; however, today's cast iron stoves are fueled by either gas or electricity, and include features not seen on historic models, such as knobs and timers.
Cast iron hardware was commonly used in 18th century homes because it was affordable and durable. Reproductions of cast iron hardware, such as door and cabinet knobs, hinges, bolts, handles and locks, are used for building materials today. Cast iron hardware can be used to compliment a number of home decor themes, and is especially nice in rooms where a rustic look is desired.
