How to Hang Items From a Ceiling

Hanging things from the ceiling requires more than just a hammer and nails, whether you are looking to do something temporary or permanent. To ensure a hung item is secure and its weight won't damage the ceiling, consider what the object weighs and how best to support it. Extremely light objects only need a simple hanger, while heavy objects with a lot of movement need extra support to function.

Things You'll Need

  • Adhesive ceiling hooks
  • Screw-in ceiling hooks
  • Butterfly anchor
  • Drill
  • 2 (2-by-4) oak boards, approximately 2 feet long
  • 8 wood screws, about 3 inches long
  • Eye bolt
  • S-hook

Instructions

    • 1

Use adhesive hooks that affix right to the ceiling to hold very light things, such as holiday lights, tinsel, banners or flower garlands. Purchase a package of small hooks with peel-off adhesive tabs on the back. Apply the hooks to the ceiling about 1 foot apart. Press on the hook gently to ensure that the whole adhesive is making contact with the ceiling.

Hang a plant, lamp or stuffed animal net from the ceiling using ceiling hooks. Drill a small hole into a drywall ceiling to insert a butterfly anchor. Screw the ceiling hook into the butterfly anchor. The ceiling hook has a hook on one end and screw threads on the other. Turn the ceiling hook until the base is flush with the ceiling.

Hang heavy objects, such as a hammock or punching bag, from the ceiling using heavy-duty anchors within an oak board. Drill a pilot hole in the ceiling, then climb into the attic and locate the hole. Screw an oak board into the ceiling joists using 4 wood screws so that the center of the board is over the pilot hole. Screw a second board on top of the first using 4 wood screws. Go back downstairs and drill a larger hole into the pilot hole, up into the oak support boards. Screw in an eyebolt and attach an S-hook.
