Symmetrical Framing Ideas for Walls

Hanging picture frames on the wall in a symmetrical arrangement creates a calm, orderly look that complements traditional decor and balances eclectic decor. A symmetrical frame arrangement works especially well above large pieces of furniture, such as a sectional couch or a low bench. Consider hanging pictures or artwork of a similar style, color or theme for a more cohesive appearance.
  1. Rectangular Grid

    • The simplest and easiest symmetrical frame arrangement is the rectangular grid. To achieve this look, place pictures of the same size in identical frames. Arrange the frames to form a grid, so the outline of the entire arrangement forms a rectangle. Leave the same amount of space between all the frames. This arrangement gives the space a formal and elegant feel. For a playful touch, use bold colors and vary the artwork.

    Imaginary Vertical Line

    • You could choose to arrange the frames so they form a mirror image along an imaginary vertical line on the wall. This means that the right side of the frame arrangement would mirror the left side of the arrangement. This allows you to be creative because you could use frames in different sizes and colors. You would need to have at least two of each frame type to create this arrangement. For example, you could use smaller frames at the top of the arrangement and larger frames at the bottom.

    Imaginary Horizontal Line

    • Dividing the wall into two parts along a horizontal line also leads to a symmetrical frame arrangement. Similar to the previous arrangement, you need at least two of each frame type. Check the height of the wall you need to create this look to ensure sufficient space both above and below the line, taking into account any furniture pieces, baseboard molding, chair rail and crown molding, if applicable. Use the middle point along the wall height for a full-height arrangement or use eye level as the dividing line.

    Big and Bold

    • Instead of arranging several small and medium-sized frames, you could use two large frames to add some drama in the space. Place the two large frames side by side or on top of each other. This easy trick makes the space appear larger and the two pictures create a bigger impact because there are fewer distractions, allowing the eye to focus on the main attractions. Because the colors in the artwork dominate the wall, consider using a similar color scheme when decorating the rest of the room.
