How to Create Concrete Molds for Flower Pots

You can use sand to create concrete molds for flower pots. The flower pots are made of a lightweight concrete mixture called hypertufa, first developed by European gardeners to mimic volcanic tufa rock. By using sand for the concrete molds, you can make flower pots of almost any size. It’s a great summer project for the beach if you are vacationing near the shore. Or, inexpensive bags of play sand are available at building supply stores.

Instructions

    • 1

Dump the play sand in a big pile on the plastic tarp.

    • 2

Mix together 10 lbs. of Portland cement, 10 lbs. of vermiculite and 10 lbs. of peat moss in the wheelbarrow with the trowel.

    • 3

Put on the rubber gloves. Add water, 1 cup at a time, to the cement mixture and mix it with your hands until the mixture is the texture of pudding.

    • 4

Dig holes the desired size of the flowerpots in the sand pile with the trowel, keeping the bottom of the holes flat. Add the cement hypertufa mixture to the holes, creating 1-inch thick flower pot walls and smoothing the cement with your hands. Push your index finger through the bottoms of the flower pots to create drainage holes. Let the cement hypertufa flower pots dry for 48 hours.

Pull the completed flower pots from the sand. Brush any excess sand off the pots with the wire brush.
