How to Replace Wood on Pawleys Island Hammocks

Pawleys Island Hammocks are known for their traditional rope construction methods and simple designs. However, if the wood pieces on either side of your Pawleys Island Hammock become weathered or broken, it prevents you from enjoying the hammock. Instead of buying a brand new hammock, refurbish your Pawleys Island Hammock by replacing the wood yourself. Using a few basic supplies and tools found at a hardware store, you can make your hammock look and work like new.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Untie the hammock from the trees or poles on which it is hanging. Lay the hammock on a flat surface.

    • 2

Untie the large knot on the ends of the hammock. These knots are designed to cinch all the ropes together on either end.

    • 3

Spread the individual ropes straight out on both sides, and slide the wood pieces off the ropes.

    • 4

Measure the length, width and height of the wood pieces, and cut two pieces of wood to the same measurements using a circular saw.

    • 5

Drill holes along one side of each new wood piece using a drill with a 1/2-inch spade bit, spacing and positioning the holes according the holes on the used wood pieces.

    • 6

Sand the finished wood pieces using medium-grit sandpaper to remove splinters and eliminate roughness.

    • 7

Slide the wood pieces back onto both sides of the Pawleys Island Hammock, inserting one rope per hole.

    • 8

Retie large knots on both sides of the hammock to connect all the ropes back together.

    • 9

Hang up the refurbished Pawleys Island Hammock for use.
