Can You Use Abitibi White Tile Board for a Dry Erase Surface?

The technology that makes a dry erase board work is actually in the marker. The markers contain particles called "release particles" that prevent the ink from sticking to non-porous surfaces. You may use any nonporous surface as a dry erase board, including tile board, manufactured by Decorative Panels International, formerly known as Abitibi-Price.
  1. White Tile Board

    • Tile board is a layer of melamine — a type of plastic — glued to medium density fiberboard. The melamine is made to look like ceramic tiles and comes in a variety of patterns and colors. Tile board from most manufacturers is inexpensive, nonporous and makes a perfect dry erase board. Use construction adhesive to permanently attach the board to your wall.

    Shower Board

    • Shower board is similar to tile board. It is medium density fiberboard covered with melamine. The benefit to installing shower board as a dry erase surface is that it is smooth. Tile board is grooved to make it look like tile, which may make writing difficult. Use construction adhesive to install shower board on your wall.

    Picture Frame

    • For a more decorative dry erase board, use a picture frame. An old frame you aren't using is perfect for the job, but may can also find inexpensive frames at second-hand stores. Cover the frame's cardboard backing with wrapping paper or any art paper you like for a creative twist.

    Page Protectors

    • To make individual dry erase boards for students or your children, use page protectors. Insert white, hole-punched card stock into the protector to provide a sturdy writing surface. Use the page protectors in binders for class if you are a teacher. Parents may use them for long road trips or just for everyday entertainment.
