Measure your table’s width and length. Add about 10 inches, plus 1 inch for hemming on each side. Use these measurements to complete Steps 3 to 5.
Place your tablecloth on a clean, flat surface.
Alter a rectangular tablecloth into a square one by cutting its longest length down to the table’s square dimensions. Fold the tablecloth into quarters. Measure off the correct size square and cut through all the quarters along the side of the open edge. Practice on a piece of note paper before cutting the real thing.
Change a square tablecloth into a round one. Fold the table covering into quarters. Cut the open edge into a rounded corner so it resembles a snow cone. Practice on a piece of paper first to get the correct angle. Cut the minimum of material on your first try, as you can always cut more later.
Alter a rectangular tablecloth into an oval covering. Fold the tablecloth in quarters. Practice on a piece of paper first to get the correct angle. Cut from the bottom edge of the open fold in a gentle arc until you reach the top center fold.
Make your hem by folding back 1 inch all the way around your tablecloth. Pin it on the underside with straight pins. Stitch by machine or by hand.
Add a lace border to the hem on a formal tablecloth. Pin it in place on the right side up and sew by machine or by hand. Snip off loose threads.
