How to Choose Precut Framing Mats

A mat placed in the frame with a painting or photograph offers protection by keeping humidity or cleaning fluids from coming into contact with the piece. It also adds a decorative and artistic look to photographs and paintings. Choosing the right mat involves several factors that contribute to the best look when the piece is hanging on your wall.
  1. Color

    • The colors that appear in your painting or photograph help you choose a mat that coordinates and brings out the image portrayed. In general, choosing a mat that is lighter than your wall color and darker than your piece of artwork will help the piece stand out, both inside the mat and against the wall. A mat that is a different color than the frame will add to this effect. Take your photograph or painting with you, if possible, when shopping, which allows you to hold different mats against it for the best match. Take a picture of the piece if it is too large to carry with you. A color swatch of your wall color will also help you choose a mat color.

    Size

    • The size of the photograph or painting factors into mat choice because the wrong size may make it difficult to position the piece symmetrically inside the mat and frame. Measure your piece of artwork and frame, which helps you determine how much space should be covered by the mat. The mat should leave an even amount of space along each side of the piece -- top, bottom and sides -- to prevent the image from looking lopsided inside the frame.

    Stacking

    • Some artists layer several mats inside the frame to make the piece stand out. This is generally done in several colors that bring out those that are present in the painting or photograph. In general, the mat closest to the artwork should show the least in terms of its margins. Avoid using too many mats, which may make it hard to place the frame backing on the piece, and could alter how it looks when it hangs on the wall. This can also detract from the image inside the frame by making it look too busy.

    Custom Mats

    • Many photo and art supply stores sell a wide selection of precut mats, allowing you to find the right fit. In some cases, you may not be able to find what you need. This is true for some pieces bought in foreign countries where standard measurements are different from those in America, or if you cut a canvas to create a customized painting size. Some art stores offer custom framing and mat-sizing services, allowing you to purchase a precut mat that is the exact size needed.
