How to Hang on Hollow Walls

Drywall, plaster and other thin materials that compose walls are often not strong enough to support hanging objects. Often, the object will put pressure on the nail or screw, which will eventually begin to tear at the wall material. Ideally, objects should be hung using the studs behind the wall as an anchor. When the stud is not available, you can secure the object to hollow portions of the wall, as long as you employ a support anchor.

Instructions

    • 1

Mark the place on the wall where you want to hang the item with a pencil.

    • 2

Find any studs behind the wall with a stud finder. Place the stud finder flat against the wall, and hold down the locator button. Move it left to right over the area where you want to hang the object. If a stud is located, mark it with a pencil.

    • 3

Adjust the placement of the object, if necessary, to avoid any obstructions or to hang the object from the stud.

    • 4

Pre-drill a hole into the wall with an electric drill.

    • 5

Twist a drywall anchor or toggle bolt into the pre-drilled hole with your hand. The anchor or bolt wings must be tucked fully behind the wall. A drywall anchor or toggle bolt is only necessary when you're hanging the object from the drywall rather than into a stud. Drywall anchors will hold up light objects, and toggle bolts should be used to hang heavy mirrors, shelving and cabinetry.

    • 6

Turn a screw clockwise into the pre-drilled hole or secured anchor with the drill or a Phillips screwdriver. Then, hang the object.
