How to Layer Black & White Curtains With Leather Furniture & Wood Paneling

Sometimes the furniture and accessories you have in your living room are mix-and-match items that you have collected over the course of many years. This creates difficulty when you attempt to pull the look of your living room together. The pieces don't match one another in style or color. If your space has disparate elements such as black and white curtains, leather furniture and wood paneling all in one space, the way to make these pieces work together is to visually tie them together. You'll use your decorative accessories so that they layer the look of these items together, making the whole room look pulled together.

Instructions

    • 1

Anchor the couch visually in the room by laying down a black and white print rug. If your couch is brown leather, throw a zebra-print rug on the floor to create a safari look. For a more country look, add a black and white rug with a geometric American Indian pattern on it.

    • 2

Purchase some couch throw pillows in solid black and white, as well as some with prints that feature both colors. Layer these together on the couch. You can mix and match the prints, because the black and white will function as a visual tie among all of the pillows. Combine patterns such as black and white paisley, stripes, squares or circles.

    • 3

Push a black and white ottoman in front of the couch. Look for one that has wood trim that matches the wood of the paneling.

    • 4

Look for side chairs that have black and white striped cushions and wood arm rests. Tie the look of the chairs to the couch and the curtains by tossing some of the throw pillows into the chairs' cushions.

    • 5

Flank the chairs with black or white side tables. Adorn the tables with lamps that have black or white shades and a wooden base.

    • 6

Center a wooden coffee table that matches the shade and the texture of the paneling. An Art Deco-style table with a wood inlay and black and white geometric tiles would make an appropriate choice.

    • 7

Hang the black and white curtains on a wooden curtain rod. Depending on the decorating style you've chosen, this can be made from materials like bamboo, a large branch or a wooden dowel. The wood should complement the paneling. To create a layered look, hang a pair of wooden shutters in the window.
