DIY Vintage Wall Art

When you run out of ideas -- and space -- for displaying those vintage collectibles, consider mounting them as wall art. Not only plates and framed prints can make the transition from shelf to wall; with the right hardware or adhesive, you can make interesting displays out of anything -- from old silverware to vintage books or even fabric. Inventive display options including floating bookshelves, shadow boxes and picture ledges, all of which put your best memorabilia in the spotlight.

Instructions

    • 1

Examine your collections of vintage memorabilia to determine what would work as wall art -- tin advertising trays, a collection of china saucers -- even old board games have exciting possibilities.

    • 2

Find the area in your room or home in which you would like to hang your vintage art pieces. Use uncluttered locations that coordinate with the items you plan to display -- saucers and old dishes make sense in a dining room or kitchen, but not so much in a game room -- and vice-versa with board games.

    • 3

Mount your vintage collection to a vertical surface. Possibilities for installation include plate hangers, shadow boxes, picture frames, wall cleats -- for heavy collectibles -- and adhesive hooks and anchors for paneling or drywall.

    • 4

Experiment and be creative. Forego traditional framing methods and try displaying items with only a frame mounted directly to the wall around the art piece. Tilt the frame at an interesting angle. Arrange smaller pieces in pleasing groupings of three to five and larger artwork as individual wall art.
