How to Use Silk Flowers for a Girl's Room Wall Decor

A young girl may change her mind often, and what she might claim is her favorite thing ever one week may be a huge miss the next. When it comes to decorating her bedroom, this can pose a challenge, especially when it comes to costs. By creating some of your own decor, you reduce the investment and build something unique, which may hold her interest longer. Silk flowers lend themselves to various types of wall decor no matter what her age, from custom 3-D artwork to a fun spin on wallpaper.
  1. Around a Mirror

    • Whether for dress-up or before school-outfit checks, mirrors are relatively standard in girls’ bedrooms, yet decorative ones often are a bit too expensive for kids’ rooms. Dress up a basic mirror with a wood frame using silk flowers, turning it into functional and decorative type of wall decor. Remove the flower heads from the stems and glue these all the way around the perimeter of the mirror with craft glue or a hot glue gun. Choose colors that coordinate with the bedroom so the new piece fits in with the existing ones; for a purple and white bedroom, lilac, cream and lime-green silk flowers are bright and fun, contrasting just enough to stand out without being garish.

    Creating a Wreath

    • Wreaths are for more than just the holidays, and a silk-flower version is a beautiful addition to the back of your daughter’s door, over her headboard or between two close windows. Size the wreath so it takes up at least 2/3 of the wall or door if it’s not paired with other items, because a too-small wreath looks awkward. You can purchase a wreath base from any major craft store and twist the flowers into the grid by their stems, filling it out. For this project, flowers with a wire stem rather than a plastic one are best. A wreath of silk lilies and bright sunflowers is perfect for a younger girl’s room, while orchids in a solid color are a bit more grown up for tweens and teenagers.

    Individual Flower Display

    • Let the silk flowers stand on their own by creating one-of-a-kind wallpaper, securing just the heads to a painted wall and scattering them in a fun design. Plan your layout before you get started to avoid any excess spaces or too-close groupings. With a pencil, create “X” marks along the wall. When you’re ready, have your de-stemed silk flowers and hot glue gun at hand. Dot the glue on the center of the “X” and press the flowers into the wall. If your child ever tires of the decor, a blow dryer set on high melts the glue just enough to remove the flowers. This looks stunning behind a daybed, framing either side of a door or arranged above a desk. Silk flowers with a flat base, meant to be glued to flat surfaces, make this project simple, although basic bulk silk flowers work as well.

    DIY Artwork

    • With a canvas, craft glue, a selection of silk flowers and other decorative pieces, create a unique piece of artwork. Turn a picture of your daughter into a sketch with photo-editing software and glue this to the canvas. Separate flowers by color and glue them onto the picture, creating a floral version of your girl’s face. For a non-personal twist on this, use real tree branches, small rocks and other pieces to create a landscape design. Glue branches and rocks to the bottom portion of a landscape and attach silk flowers above this, creating a 3-D field. Hang the creation on the wall as you would any other piece.
