Quilt Project Ideas

Individuals from cultures all over the world have been making quilts for hundreds of years. Though quilts were originally designed to be used as bedding, you can now find quilts made from a variety of materials being displayed as works of art. If you want to create your own quilt, there are a variety of project ideas that will make it a piece of art and give it special meaning.
  1. Quilted Table Runner

    • You can dress up your dining room table with a quilted table runner. Determine the size needed to properly cover your table, and then choose the fabrics you want to use to construct it. You can make several table runners out of seasonal fabrics, and have one that will match each season and holiday. Quilted table runners take less work then a traditional quilt and are a great gift idea.

    Photo Quilt

    • A photo quilt is the ultimate way to preserve the memories of your family and friends. Choose a theme for your quilt, such as baby's first Christmas or graduation day, and then choose pictures that correspond to your theme. Have the pictures printed on fabric and then use that fabric to create a quilt. This project requires no more work then a traditional quilt and you can print the pictures at home onto fabric paper that is safe for use in your ink-jet or laser printer.

    Friendship Quilt

    • A friendship quilt is designed for a large group of friends who are looking for a quilt project to complete together. Each friend should construct a square following the friendship star pattern, and then embroider her name in the center. The project quilt leader should then sew the pieces together and quilt it to finish. You can then donate the quilt to a non-profit auction, or conduct a drawing to determine which friend gets to keep it.

    T-Shirt Quilt

    • A T-shirt quilt is the perfect way to give purpose to the old T-shirts and clothes lying around your home. Gather the shirts and other clothes that you want to use and then cut the pieces from them that you want to preserve, such as specific logos or pictures. Align the pieces together, and determine if you have enough fabric to sew a new quilt or if you should embroider the pieces onto a solid piece of fabric. A T-shirt quilt is great for emptying the closets in your home and it makes a great gift for teenagers and younger adults.
