How to Put on the Tablecloth

Although a tablecloth might seem like protection for the tabletop or an impromptu napkin for the exceptionally messy, it should actually be considered a frame for your food and table settings. Few things will make a table look more unkempt than a tablecloth that is crooked, the wrong size or shape or laid incorrectly. Taking a little extra care with the first element of table setting can only add to the ambiance of your meal and help the food look that much better.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a tablecloth that is a corresponding size and shape for the table you would like to use. In general, the length and width of the material should allow it to hang approximately 8 inches around the circumference, depending on the formality of the dinner.

    • 2

Cut a quilted pad or thick piece of flannel to match the dimensions of your tabletop. Lay the padding down on the clean, dry surface of the table. This padded material will help keep the tablecloth in place, absorb any spills and allow the tablecloth to drape more attractively over the edges.

    • 3

Lay the tablecloth evenly over the top of the padding, keeping the center crease straight down the middle of the table. Smooth out any wrinkles.

    • 4

Check the edges to make sure they hang evenly all the way around the table.
