Ways to Monogram Glassware

Monograms are a clever way to add personalized elegance to your favorite glassware. These not only look charming in a display case, they can be used on special events to celebrate with a touch of class. Ordering monogrammed glassware can be an expensive option. It is more economical to create your own monogram creations from scratch by one of several different options. Regardless of your skill level, monogramming your glasses is a simple craft project that can be completed in several hours.
  1. Glass Paint

    • Perhaps the simplest way to get a monogrammed effect on glassware is to use paint. You will need a specialized paint designed for use on glass. This is often an acrylic or oil-based paint that is simple to apply with a brush or marker. If you are not comfortable with hand painting the monogram on each glass, use a stencil and a brush. After the glassware is painted, gentle hand washing is recommended to avoid peeling or cracking of the painted image.

    Etching

    • An elegant way to monogram glassware is through an etching technique. While you can order sandblasted etched glassware from commercial outlets, you can create an etched-like effect from home with a few simple materials. After you have printed or drawn your monogram design, transfer the image onto a piece of vinyl. Once the image is transferred, cut out the image with a craft knife to create a stencil. Position the vinyl in place over the glass and fill the stencil with glass etching cream. Allow it to dry for several minutes before rinsing away the cream and removing the stencil.

    Ribbon

    • If the glassware is going to be purely decorative, ribbon is one way to monogram. Cut out a monogrammed design with a craft knife from decorative ribbon or fabric. Fold the edge of the fabric under 1/4 of an inch and press with an iron. Create a clean hem by hot gluing the pressed edge in place. You may also choose to embroider the monogram onto a piece of fabric and cut out the surrounding material. Use a thin bead of hot glue or super glue to attach the monogram to the glassware.

    Glass Covers

    • Another decorative option for monogramming glassware is to make glass covers. This will allow your glassware to be monogrammed when displayed on a shelf or in a china cabinet, but it will stay easy to use and wash. If you have basic sewing skills, this cover is easy to create by wrapping the glass in fabric, and then sewing the determined seams together. Then just slide the cover into place. If you are not comfortable with sewing, use ribbon to tie decorative fabric in place. The ribbon can be pinned on with safety pins or hot glued.
