How to Organize Baskets and Bins

Organizing your baskets and bins properly allows you to gain the full benefit of these storage tools. If you arrange them thoughtfully and with some imagination, you can bring more beauty, storage space and organization to your home. You can use the largest containers, such as those the size of a laundry basket, for purposes other than holding laundry. They can also be used as toy containers in your child's room, fabric or yarn baskets in your craft area or to hold sports equipment in your garage.

Instructions

    • 1

Gather all the baskets and bins you own into one room. Make sure you have enough space to be able to lay each container flat on the floor. Space them so that you can easily move them around.

    • 2

Sort each of your baskets into size groups of small, medium, large and extra large. Do the same with your bins. You will now have up to eight sections of containers. If you have identical baskets or bins, keep these together. Keep the covers of any bins with their mates.

    • 3

Separate each group by color. Keep sizes together within each color. Continue to keep identical bins or baskets in the same area on the floor.

    • 4

Choose baskets or bins of colors and sizes that are appropriate for holiday containers such as Easter baskets or Christmas holiday decoration and tree ornament bins. Color code these appropriately. You might reserve pink and purple for Easter baskets and red and green for Christmas ornament bins. This will encourage you to organize your holiday decorations all together in one place. Move these to your chosen holiday decorations area.

    • 5

List the name of each room in your home on your paper. Write possible uses for baskets or bins in various areas under the corresponding room names. Also write the size of the container you would need for each use.

    • 6

Decide the colors of baskets and bins that would coordinate with each room's color scheme. Referring to your list, choose baskets and bins of the same colors and bins of appropriate colors and sizes for one of the rooms in your home. Bring these baskets and bins to that room.

    • 7

Follow step number 6 for each of the rooms in your home, until you run out of rooms or containers. Fill your containers and find a home for them in each room.
