About Capiz Chandeliers

Authentic capiz chandeliers are crafted from the exterior flat shell of the windowpane oyster. Capiz shells are harvested from the Philippine and Indonesian Islands. Skilled, native artisans handcraft these spectacular chandeliers. Machine-manufactured capiz shells are used to create faux replicas of the authentic capiz chandelier. With many styles available, the capiz chandelier sparks visual interest in any home decor.
  1. Origin

    • In earlier times the capiz shell was used to make windows. These small square translucent shells were held together by strips of wood, creating the panes of windows. Consequently this specific oyster became known as the windowpane oyster. In more recent times Asian fisherman would collect these oysters for their meat, discarding the shells. Creativity was sparked into handcrafting these spectacular shells into elaborate capiz wind chimes and chandeliers.

    Decor

    • Capiz chandeliers are well suited for the tropical decor. A simplistic beachfront cottage or an extravagant island mansion would be enhanced by a striking capiz chandelier. Sun rooms filled with wicker furniture and bright island colors are ideal locations for hanging a capiz chandelier. The shabby chic decor in a bedroom or dining area would appreciate the addition of a shimmering chandelier created out of capiz shells.

    Styles

    • The round design of the traditional crystal chandelier is mimicked by one, two or three tiers of the capiz chandelier. The shells do not touch but are placed closely together, giving it a full luxurious appearance. Capiz shells are a natural white color. Pink, amber, sea green and blue are colors that the capiz shell can be dyed to create colorful contemporary chandeliers.

    Authentic or Imitation

    • Authentic handcrafted capiz chandeliers are radiantly luminescent when the light radiates through them. An imitation is frequently made of plastic and not as iridescent. Sometimes visually distinguishing between the two is difficult. One telltale factor pointing to a replica is often the price. A faux capiz chandelier will be lower in price as compared to the significantly higher priced authentic capiz chandelier.
