Cookie Jar Art Project

A cookie jar is the perfect palette on which to display an endless amount of creativity. Transform plain cookie jars using a wide variety of decorative styles with a fairly simple collection of tools and supplies. When your project is finished and dry, a freshly baked batch of homemade cookies, decorated to match the theme of the jar, is a wonderful accompaniment.
  1. Snowman

    • For an adorable holiday cookie jar, transform the jar's plain shape into that of a puffy, white snowman. For this project, you will need white construction paper, scotch tape, cotton balls, glue, black construction paper and a toilet paper roll, scissors, a black permanent marker and any other decorative items, such as buttons, a miniature scarf and googly eyes. Begin by crumpling the white paper into fat balls and firmly tape each ball into place around the jar, covering the entire thing. Place a fat ball on the lid of the jar to serve as the snowman's head and create a wider body around the jar itself. Cover these paper balls by gluing cotton balls all around for a more polished look. To create the snowman's hat, cut two circles from the black construction paper, one larger than the other, to serve as the bottom and top of the hat. Cut the bottom half off of the toilet paper roll and color it black, then attach the paper circles and tape to the lid. Decorate your snowman however you please.

    Animals

    • Purchase a selection of paint in animal colors, such as yellow for a duck, white for a bunny, and brown, green and orange for a leopard, frog, giraffe, lion and more. Paint your jar in the color of the animal that you like best. Decorate the jar with small craft items: googly eyes, as well as a colored pom-pom for the nose, pipe cleaner ears for a bug, bunny rabbit or ,and triangular or semicircular ears cut from foam for a dog, wolf, lion, tiger or leopard. Place ears on top of the lid, and place nose and eyes on the front. For a duck or bird, include a triangular beak cut from foam.

    Garden

    • For the perfect spring cookie jar, paint it to look like a beautiful, blossoming garden. Paint halfway up the sides of the jar with green paint to resemble stalks of grass and then create green stems with leaves to fill the top half of the jar. Poke holes in the lid of the jar and stick in green pipe cleaners to continue the flowers' stems. At the tops of the pipe cleaners, attach colorful flower-shaped pipe cleaners or tissue paper and twist the stems to secure them in place.

    Chocolate Chip Cookie

    • For a look that works year-round and always makes an ideal cookie jar, paint it to resemble a chocolate chip cookie. The only trouble with this theme is that it will make you hungry every time you see it and might cause your cookies to disappear faster. For a chocolate chip cookie jar, all you need is tan and dark brown paint. Paint the entire jar tan, including the lid, and wait for it to dry. Once the paint is dry, dot the jar with small, dark brown circles to resemble the chocolate chips.
