Ideas for Quilted Bear Decor

Quilts

• A quilt with a bear theme should logically be made mostly of mountain greens and blues, with black or brown bears scattered across its surface, like so many exclamation marks. Create a mother bear followed by her cubs, or a circle of dancing bears for a child's quilt. For a hunting-themed quilt, depict a bear rearing on its hind legs or fishing in a stream. Ring the borders of the quilt in bear paw prints, bear cubs or bees, if the bear is depicted raiding a hive.

• Quilted pillows and throws may echo the theme of a bear quilt or other bear decorations in the home, or expand on them. For example, if your bear quilt depicts a bear fishing in a stream, your pillow may show the now-successful bear rolling on the bank with a fish in its paws. A throw may depict the satisfied bear sleeping off his meal beside a pile of fish bones. Alternatively, you might depict the stages of a bear's life, from birth to cub to mature adult.

• A quilted bear-themed wall hanging makes a dramatic focal point for a cabin or rustic home. The style of the hanging should be consistent with the overall style of the home. For example, if your home is filled with folk art, the quilt should be slightly quirky; show a ring of bears dancing in the forest moonlight. If yours is a hunting cabin, depict a serious portrait of a black bear against a majestic mountain skyline. If the quilted wall hanging is for a baby's room, choose pastel colors and teddy bears.

Clothing and Accessories

• Quilted jackets, bags and coats are popular at mountain resorts, especially in the winter. Create a quilted jacket with a row of bears and pine cones along the hem. Sew a quilted purse using Native American artwork as inspiration, with highly stylized depictions of bears and other animals. Make a child's quilted winter coat covered with bear squares, each showing a bear cub getting into some kind of mischief.
