How Remove the Gilt From a Glass Rim

Gilding, or gold leaf, comes in paint or sheets that are meticulously applied to the surface to create an antique, ornate appearance. The gilding is covered with a product, such as a shellac, polyurethane or lacquer to provide a protective coating. After several years and exposure to air and moisture, gilding on a glass surface will begin to chip away and fade. The gilding and coating material can be removed without the need for expensive chemicals or specialized equipment.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the surface of the glass on top and around the gilding with a dish towel that has been soaked in soapy water. This will remove any dust, dirt or grime on the surface.

    • 2

Scrape off the majority of the gilding with a sharp razor blade. Avoid using a heavy hand when removing the gilding as this will leave scratches in the glass.

    • 3

Wipe away any loose gilding from the glass with a soapy dish towel.

    • 4

Allow the glass to dry and examine it for any remaining gilding, as there may still be gold leaf in smaller decorative areas.

    • 5

Wet a cotton swab with acetone and rub off any remaining gilding, including any that is in crevices or cracks.

    • 6

Wash the glass off with a soapy dish towel to remove the acetone.
