How to Customize a Photograph for a Locket

A locket is traditionally used as a special place to keep things that are near and dear to your heart. You can place a lock of hair, a flower petal (from your wedding, for example) or other memento inside it. Small photographs of loved ones are typically placed inside locket compartments. Because this type of jewelry is small, the photographs must be small too. They must be clear and of good quality so the details can be seen.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width and height of the locket compartment. If a template is included, measure it to determine how big the photograph needs to be.

    • 2

Scan the photograph and save it on a computer. Use a photo editing software program to make it larger or smaller so it fits the dimensions of the locket. You can also touch up the photograph to make it look its best.

    • 3

Print the customized photograph. Use the clear plastic photo cover or a template to trim your photo to the correct size. To make your own template, use a piece of paper that's slightly larger than the dimensions of the locket. Place the paper over the locket compartment. Carefully trace the shape with a pencil. Cut the template out.

    • 4

Position the template over the photograph so the subject in the picture is centered. Hold the template and the photograph together firmly. Trim the photograph with a pair of sharp scissors.

    • 5

Laminate the photograph if you wish to protect it. A self-laminating sheet is made of clear plastic with adhesive on the back side. Cut a piece that's slightly larger than the photograph. Remove the protective backing. Place the laminating sheet over the photograph and press it into place. Trim the excess plastic. Place the customized photograph into the locket.
