How to Decorate Washboards

One component of the vintage decorating style is the washboard. These wooden, glass and metal boards were once prized for their ability to get clothes clean, but now they're appreciated for their aesthetic value and the warmth they can bring to a room. There are several ways to decorate a washboard before placing it in your home.

  Decide where you want to place your washboard in your home. Kitchens, bathrooms and laundry rooms are generally good places for a washboard.

  Take a close look at your washboard. If it contains vintage lettering or a vintage advertisement, you may not need to add much decoration. Try hanging a black and white photo from the top of the washboard using rough twine and a vintage clothespin.

  If the washboard is more battered than you like, spray paint it in a color that will harmonize with your chosen room. Or rub the washboard with paint using a rag for an antique look.

  Once the washboard is dry, leave as is or decorate with stencils, a short saying or proverb, or other designs.

  Place finished washboard in room of your choice.
