How to Identify Milk Marks on Glass

Milk glass is a decorative style of glass that is commonly used for home decor. Originating in the 16th century, this glass is opaque and white. Hence, the title milk glass as it is milky in appearance. It has certain marks or characteristics that identify it as authentic. Since there can be many replicas or fakes out there on the market, it is important to know the marks of real milk glass in order to know you are getting what you paid for.

      The era in which the glass was made determines its value. Older glass does not necessarily mean that it has the more value. Nineteenth century glass is considered valuable. Following in a close second is 20th century glass that originates around the time of World War II. When milk glass became heavily mass produced in the 1940s and 50s, the value dropped. As more of an object is made, it becomes more available and loses its value.

      Note the pattern to determine the value of the glass. A block-and-fan or button-and-arches pattern is common for milk glass made in the 19th century. Less common patterns in the 1800s contained holly, stripes, ribbing, stars, figurines or no pattern at all. These patterns will assist in determining the value of the milk glass.

      Look at the color of the glass. The thicker the color of the white glass, the more value it contains. Cheaper milk glass will have thin, clear edges. The lowest values of milk glass will have some clarity throughout the entire piece. Generally, the most opaque white glass comes from the 1840s while the 1880s and beyond produced a more clear glass.
